The Alachua County Medical Society We Care Physician Referral Network Program
The Alachua County Medical Society’s We Care Physician Referral Network is a dynamic collaboration of private and public enterprise.
It is comprised of three components, Primary, Oral Health, and Specialty Care. It is supported by physicians, dentists, local hospitals, laboratories, home health agencies, mental health professionals, a variety of ancillary service providers, and has recently added podiatrists, massage therapists, and chiropractors to the Network. Since 1990 the program has received more than 5,000 requests for volunteer medical and dental care. More than half of those requests were met by volunteer professionals.
Programs based on the Alachua County We Care model provide volunteer services throughout Florida. A 2015/2016 Department of Health report on statewide volunteerism documented more than 298 million dollars in free medical and dental care. The We Care model represents the best efforts of volunteer professionals, social services agencies, State and local governments, collaborating to provide for the less fortunate in a dignified and effective manner. As Medicaid programs continue to be downsized or eliminated, the We Care program expects to fill an ever present and now growing need for timely, dignified and necessary medical and dental services to the truly needy.
